BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
As an institution dedicated to informal science education, cultural experiences and the latest technology, the Museum of Discovery and Science constantly updates our products to meet the demands of new scientific discoveries and pedagogical methods.
The Museum has an obligation to the South Florida community to remain exciting and fresh for its members and visitors. The demand for an updated, current facility and new educational programming is increasing based on recent guest surveys.
The Expansion and Renovation Project: Phase 2 continued the Museum’s plans for critical renovations and upgrades to the original building footprint. In 2014, an extensive renovation was completed for the AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater. This included a new 60 ft. x 80 ft. giant screen, 300 new luxury seats, new powerful digital surround sound system and the addition of a digital projection system to complement the 15/70 IMAX film projector. In 2016, a new IMAX with Laser System was installed.
In 2017, the Museum implemented major facility improvements to the original facility. Restrooms and HVAC systems were also updated. In early 2018, a new fabric atrium canopy and solar panel “awnings” over the balcony were installed, which will reduce utility costs and maximize public space.
In 2018, a 27,000-square-foot outdoor Science Park opened, With lush, eco-friendly landscaping, the three-quarter-acre park offers a safe environment for school groups and families to explore giant, full-body interactive science exhibits, while encouraging social interaction and physical exercise.
The addition of the Science Park has drawn even more visitors to the downtown Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District, with positive repercussions for neighboring shops, restaurants and arts/entertainment establishments. The Science Park meets the need for enhanced education in physical science and fully utilizes Museum property that was vacant. The expansion/renewal also expands the Museum’s capacity to create and deliver high quality science programs to students, teachers and the wider public.
The success of the Museum of Discovery and Science’s capital campaign is made possible by the generosity of our supporters. To learn how you can be part of our future or if you have any questions, please e-mail the Development Office.
