SUMMER CAMPS

Camp Discovery has been transformed for Summer 2018!

We welcome campers ages 6 -12. This year campers will be divided into groups determined by grade:
  • 1st & 2nd grades
  • 3rd & 4th grades
  • 5th & 6th grades

Each group will be limited to 20 campers per group. Please be sure to book early, as these spots will fill up!

New this Summer!
Mandatory camp T-shirts:  Campers are now required to wear Camp Discovery T-shirts during camp. One FREE shirt will be included with registration, and additional shirts may be purchased for $10 on the registration form.
Field Trips: We have included additional offsite visits throughout the summer for 3rd and 4th graders and 5th and 6th graders! Check the camp description for dates and locations. Permission forms will be required for field trips.

RESCUE!
This week we will explore our new exhibit, Rescue! From hurricane relief teams to wildlife rescue teams, we will look at how these brave individuals help keep others safe. Learn what an emergency is and how you can prepare for one, and then engineer simple machines that help make rescues possible!

FULL STEAM AHEAD

It’s time to bring out your creative side, it’s STEAM week! We will be pushing the limits of creativity and encouraging dirty, messy, colorful science! Learn about chemistry while making fizzy works of art in our chem-ART-istry studio, bring botany into your colorful creations to learn about plant anatomy, and learn the physics behind making your own glow-in-the- dark sidewalk chalk!

CONSERVATION CRUSADERS
Explore the world around us and discover why conservation matters! We will create an appreciation of our natural world through a variety of games and activities geared towards conservation. Learn about the flora and fauna in the Everglades, tinker with the gear used to study our environment, and help build a compost bin!

July 2 – 6
POKÉMON SCIENCE

Are you ready to begin Pokémon science training? This week is all about connecting Pokémon concepts with science concepts! Learn about the properties of water in our water-type Pokémon lab, discover how Pikachu uses electricity in our circuits lab, and design new Pokémon based on real-life examples!

July 9 – 13
ALL ABOUT ANIMALS

From bird feathers to elephant trunks, all animals are unique! This week we will discover how these special features help animals survive. Learn how arctic mammals stay warm in the snow, why bird beaks come in so many different shapes and sizes, and then meet some of the museum’s ambassador animals and learn what makes them unique!

It’s time to bring out your creative side, it’s STEAM week! We will be pushing the limits of creativity and encouraging dirty, messy, colorful science! ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

Civil engineering is one of the oldest types of engineering around. Civil engineers design buildings, bridges, and roads all over the world! This week, join us as we learn what it takes to build skyscrapers, bridges, and highways. Then, put your new engineering skills to the test and work together to build a new city built by Camp Discovery!

Explore our new exhibit, Rescue! Learn how advancing technology improves our ability to rescue through an oil-spill clean-up lab, and then engineer devices like pulley systems and avalanche litters that help make rescues possible! Field trip: On Friday, we will visit the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society and learn how our ability to rescue has advanced over time!

Bring out your creative side, it’s STEAM week! We will be pushing the limits of creativity and encouraging dirty, messy, colorful science! Play with colorful polymers in our slime lab, learn the physics behind pendulums while creating giant works of art, and use your math skills to make transforming shapes! Field trip: On Friday, we‘ll visit the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society’s art and photography exhibit!

CONSERVATION CRUSADERS

Explore our natural world and discover why conservation matters! Play a game to learn how living things interact in ecosystems to help sustain life, experiment with a technology that is helping to conserve water, and find out ways that you can become more eco-friendly at home!

POKÉMON SCIENCE

Masters Ready to become a Pokémon science master?! This week is all about connecting Pokémon concepts to science! Become a junior geologist in our rock-type Pokémon lab, build ecosystems and food chains in a real-world Pokémon game, and harness the power of the sun – just like Venusaur’s solar beam!

ALL ABOUT ANIMALS

This week is “all about animals!” Did you know that animals are quite the engineers? Learn how they build shelters and practice building your own. Discover which everyday products were first engineered by animals and learn how to make man made versions of them, and then meet some of the museum’s ambassador animals!

Did you know that fish have a special organ that helps them float? Did you know that coral is an animal? This week, explore some of the weird phenomena that happens under the sea! Learn how some marine animals have strangely adapted to life in the water, how coral classifies as an animal, and how humans have learned to map the ocean floor!

July 30 – August 3
ANATOMY ACADEMY

Discover how our organs work to keep us healthy! This week, we’ll re-create a cell and learn all about its parts, build a model heart to visually understand how it pumps blood throughout our body, and play a bone relay game to learn about the skeletal system!

August 6 – 10
ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

Civil engineers have been around for centuries and without them we wouldn’t have bridges, buildings, or roads! This week, we’ll take a trip through history to discover how civil engineers have advanced the way we live. Then, we’ll use our knowledge to create a city of the future! Field trip: On Friday, we will visit the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society to discover how civil engineering developed in our city!

Engineer devices like air bags that save lives, and then step into our distraction lab and learn how distractions like texting influences your ability to focus on a task!

Crazy Chemists It’s time to bring out your creative side, it’s STEAM week! We will be pushing the limits of creativity and encouraging dirty, messy, colorful science! Learn about crystallization while creating colorful crystals of your own, engineer tiny devices that color for you, and play with light and shadows to create beautiful lanterns!

CONSERVATION CRUSADERS
Explore our natural world and discover why conservation matters! Learn why scientists study ecosystems and then study an area of your own, recognize what it takes for a species to become extinct and how we can prevent it. Step into the shoes of an animal behaviorist to answer some questions about wildlife conservation. Field trip: On Friday, we will visit Hugh Taylor Birch State Park and learn about the park’s conservation efforts!

July 2 – 6
POKÉMON SCIENCE

Are you ready to become a Pokémon science gym leader? This week is all about connecting Pokémon concepts with science concepts! Learn how Magnemite uses magnetism and Electabuzz uses electricity to win Pokémon battles, then we’ll take the concepts further by learning how it is used in engineering and technology projects around the world!

July 9 – 13
ALL ABOUT ANIMALS

If you love animals, this week is for you! Participate in dissection labs to learn about the anatomy and physiology of some of the world’s most interesting animals, discover why animals are placed in different taxonomic groups, and then meet some of the museum’s ambassador animals! Field trip: On Friday, we will visit Hugh Taylor Birch State Park and learn about the park’s animal residents!

July 16 – 20
FULL STEAM AHEAD

It’s time to bring out your creative side, it’s STEAM week! We will be pushing the limits of creativity and encouraging dirty, messy, colorful science! Learn about crystallization while creating colorful crystals of your own, engineer tiny devices that color for you, and play with light and shadows to create beautiful lanterns!

July 23 – 27
UNDER THE SEA

This week, we will be learning about everything under the sea! Perform water tests to learn about different ocean properties, participate in marine invertebrate dissections, and learn how ocean acidification works in a chemistry lab! Field trip: On Friday, we will visit Hugh Taylor Birch State Park and learn about the park’s waterways!

July 30 – August 3
ANATOMY ACADEMY
This week is all about the human body! Learn about osmosis and how it affects our red blood cells, discover the power of a neuron and create your own model, then construct a camper-sized anatomy model of everything we’ve learned!

August 6 – 10
ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

Test your engineering skills this week as we challenge you to build the biggest and strongest structures you can! Discover why engineers and architects design sturdy bridges and building. Investigate how to make a strong and resilient city of your own!
