SUMMER CAMP

SUMMER CAMP 2019

We welcome campers ages 6 -12. This year campers will be divided into groups determined by grade:
  • 1st & 2nd grades
  • 3rd & 4th grades
  • 5th & 6th grades

Each group will be limited to 20 campers per group. Please be sure to book early, as these spots will fill up!

Camp T-shirts
Campers are now required to wear Camp Discovery T-shirts during camp. One FREE shirt will be included with registration, and additional shirts may be purchased for $10 on the registration form.

Field Trips
We have included additional offsite visits throughout the summer for 3rd and 4th graders and 5th and 6th graders! Check the camp description for dates and locations. Permission forms will be required for field trips.

Superpower Dogs
Did you know that dogs have incredible talents that can benefit humans? Discover just how powerful a canine’s senses are through a scavenger hunt; partcipate in our ‘dog’ training challenge to learn how intelligent canines really are, and watch Superpower Dogs in IMAX!

Hall of Heroes

Have you ever wondered how Spiderman can swing from thin strands of web or how Storm manipulates the weather? Discovery the science behind Superman’s heat vision, Elastigirl’s flexibility, Flash’s super speed, and more! Explore our newest exhibit Hall of Heroes this week as we investigate the ways super heroes manipulate nature and science to fight crime.

  • “Comic Collectors” (grades 1 & 2)

ZOMBIE SURVIVAL TRAINING
Are you ready to take on our zombie survival training? This week, we will learn about zombie myths, how to prevent the spread of pesky germs that make us sick, investigate how scabs and bruises are our body’s way of healing, and participate in zombie agility courses! Then, of course, learn about BRAINS!

  • “Infected Investigators” (grades 1 & 2)

GAME ON!

Get competitive this week as we learn all about the science behind classic toys and games! Discover the scientific secrets behind old and new favorites and engineer a few of your own. Then, practice strategy and logic to win popular board games and take on the challenge of game board design!

  • “Sock Monkeys” (grades 1 & 2)

July 1 – 5
FIZZ, BANG, BOOM!
Celebrate the 4th of July with some crazy chemistry experiments, festive explosions, and unusual noise makers! All week long we’ll be learning about the states of matter using everything from the simple to awe-inspiring! Discover how fireworks explode into different colors, and design your own instruments in our maker’s lab.

  • “The Sparklers” (grades 1 & 2)

July 8 – 12
FOOD-OLOGY
Become a food scientist and learn how chemistry and biology play a part in the world of food science. Discover how pickles are made, learn how to make your own butter, and explore what makes bread so fluffy! (Campers will not be cooking during this week).

  • “Sweet-tooth Scientists” (grades 1 & 2)

July 15 – 19
TO THE MOON AND BACK
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing with a week filled with space science fun! Learn why the moon goes through different phases, engineer rockets, explore the parts of a comet, and investigate what makes Earth the most unique planet.

  • “Astro-tots” (grades 1 & 2)

July 22 – 26
FULL STEAM AHEAD

Bring out your creative side for STEAM week. We will be pushing the limits of creativity and encouraging dirty, messy, colorful science. Learn about chemistry while making fizzy works of art in our chem-ART-istry studio, bring botany into your colorful creations to learn about plant anatomy, and learn the physics behind making your own glow-in-the-dark sidewalk chalk.

  • “Super Scientists” (grades 1 & 2)

July 29 – August 2
EXPEDITION FLORIDA
Discover the wonders of Florida by exploring the nature all around us. We’ll learn about animals and plants that live in the Everglades, and investigate why even creepy crawlies play an important role in nature. Come meet the Museum’s own native Florida ambassador animals!

  • “Majestic Manatees” (grades 1 & 2)

HOGWARTS SUMMER SCHOOL 

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! First order of business? Get sorted and make your own wand. Then, spend your week exploring the classes of Hogwarts such as Potions, Herbology and the Study of Magical Creatures. Get ready for a week of bubbling potions, flying lessons, and much more!

  • “House Elves” (grades 1 & 2)

August 12 –13 (2-Day Camp)
KEEPING IT COOL  

Stay cool by exploring all things below zero! Explore places like the Arctic Circle and Antarctica to learn what makes them some of the world’s most unique habitats, experiment with some of the coldest substances, dry ice and liquid nitrogen, then learn how humans and animals have adapted to surviving extreme temperatures!
