The Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) was presented the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) at a White House ceremony in Washington, DC, on July 17, 2023. The medal, presented to MODS’ President and CEO Joseph P. Cox by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and IMLS Director Crosby Kemper, is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries that demonstrate excellence in service to its communities.

Selected from 30 national finalists, recipients of the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service represent institutions that provide their communities with inspired and dynamic programming that exceeds expectations. These institutions bring about change that touches the lives of individuals and helps their communities thrive. Over the past 29 years, the award has celebrated the exceptional work of museums and libraries across the nation. MODS was one of only four museums to be recognized for this honor.

Founded in 1976 as the Discovery Center, today MODS is at the forefront of science education, innovation and exploration. The mission of MODS is Connecting People to Inspiring Science. Through its mission, MODS elevates the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in our lives, impacting more than 450,000 visitors annually. The Museum embraces six enduring values: DISCOVERY through inquiry-based learning experiences; INCLUSIVITY in which equity and access are vital to success; COLLABORATION in pursuit of mission-based public and private partnerships; CREATIVITY where inspiration and innovation take flight; EDUCATION as an inspirational force for informal science; and VISITOR FOCUSED, fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere with layers of learning. National recognition from IMLS signifies the substantial role MODS has played in our region and as a national leader in the museum field and a model for community engagement and social impact.
