IGNITE Forest

January 28, 2023 @ 2:00 pm 3:00 pm

Families are invited to a special hands-on IGNITE experience on Saturday, January 28, in the Museum’s Science Park.

Learn to plant trees with renowned artist Akiko Yamashita, who will lead two one-hour planting sessions where kids will create their own planters to bring home seedlings in Kaminekkon – biodegradable cardboard pots invented by Akiko’s grandfather.

Unlike conventional planting methods, Kaminekkon doesn’t require digging a hole or watering after planting, making this an easy and fun way to plant trees. Kaminekkon works to protect the seedling’s roots, and then the structure degrades as its roots enter the ground. The honeycomb design allows for the clustering of fast-growing and slower-growing species as they protect each other from wind and harsh weather.

You can also experience Akiko Yamashita’s immersive light installation, Mother Tree and Friends, during the IGNITE Broward Festival in Esplanade Park, nightly from January 25 – 29.

Cost: Free with Museum admission.
