Dinosaurs Come to Life in New HoloTheater at the Museum of Discovery and Science, First of its Kind in the United States

Students from Pompano Middle School First to Take Part in the Experience

Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) has officially opened its HoloTheater, a custom-built holographic theater that uses cutting-edge technology to bring science stories to life in a completely new way.

Students from Pompano Middle School attended the inaugural public event at the first custom-built HoloTheater in the United States.Their excitement and reactions helped launch the attraction and showed how powerful immersive storytelling can be for young learners.

The HoloTheater is a fully immersive experience that blends advanced holographic projection, panoramic visuals and spatial audio to create three-dimensional scenes that appear in the space around the audience, without the need for 3D glasses.

“At MODS, we’re dedicated to creating powerful experiences that spark curiosity, fuel imagination and make science come alive for all ages,” said Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of the Museum of Discovery and Science. “The HoloTheater is a bold step forward in immersive learning, combining innovative technology with extraordinary storytelling to transport our guests into new worlds.”

The HoloTheater was developed by BASE Xperiential, producers of mixed-media and live holographic entertainment, and brought to market in partnership with MacGillivray Freeman Films, the world’s foremost independent producer and distributor of giant-screen films.

“This theater represents the culmination of years of development and precision engineering,” said Brian Becker, chairman and CEO of BASE Xperiential. “Every element, from the holographic projection to the spatial audio and panoramic design, was built to redefine immersive storytelling. The HoloTheater sets a new standard for what is possible in experiential entertainment and education.”

The Museum launched its HoloTheater with Dinosaur Discoveries: A Holographic Adventure, a stunning 25-minute visual journey through 140 years of paleontology that brings dinosaurs to life in jaw-dropping fashion. Upcoming holographic experiences in the pipeline include Ocean Giants: A Holographic Odyssey, to be produced by MacGillivray Freeman Films and BASE Xperiential for release in 2026. Ocean Giants will bring audiences face-to-face with some of the most magnificent and enigmatic creatures to have ever inhabited the underwater realm, both past and present.

“With Dinosaur Discoveries as the first of many holographic experiences in production, we are building a strong content pipeline that enables exhibitors to maintain consistent programming and gain marketing efficiencies,” said Shaun MacGillivray, president and producer/director of MacGillivray Freeman Films. “It’s an exciting way for museums to offer a truly unique experience while positioning themselves at the forefront of innovative edutainment.”

The HoloTheater strengthens MODS’ role as a leading destination for playful, world-class STEM learning. It complements the Museum’s hands-on exhibits, live demonstrations and outreach programs, and advances its mission of connecting people to inspiring science through innovation, play and discovery.

The HoloTheater experience is included in the Discovery Pass Plus, a new all-in-one ticket that includes Museum exhibitions, live science demonstrations, one IMAX documentary film and a HoloTheater experience. The HoloTheater is also available for field trips and private group experiences. For ticket information, visit mods.org/holotheater.
