PROGRAMS

POSITION: SEASONAL CAMP COUNSELOR – FULL TIME

The Museum of Discovery and Science seeks engaging and enthusiastic Summer Camp Counselors to supervise and instruct campers (grades 1-6). Programming is on a variety of natural and physical science topics and takes place on the museum floor, in classroom settings and outdoors in our Science Park.  Teaching is through hands-on and inquiry based methods encouraging exploration and self-directed learning.

Candidates must enjoy working with youth ages 6 to 12, possess a keen interest in science, and be committed to ongoing growth and learning in the fields of science and education. Camp staff training begins the last week of May and employment runs through August 10, 2018. Typical daily shifts for camp are 8:30a-5:00p or 9:00a-5:30p with 30-minute lunch breaks.  There are scheduled field trips throughout the summer and camp counselors will be expected to supervise their groups at all times.

Bachelor’s degree required, background in life science, earth science, astronomy, engineering and/or physical science preferred with a demonstrated previous experience teaching and/or working with children.  Experience in inquiry-based and/or experiential learning settings a plus. Experience leading or assisting programming at a science and/or nature camp preferred, be comfortable with performance and/or public speaking, have a flair for public presentation, and possess good customer service and interpersonal skills, strong written and oral communication skills and be able to multi-task and manage time efficiently. Ideal candidate is a creative individual with ability to work independently and as part of a team and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment.  Must be flexible and highly dependable, interest in and/or experience working with diverse audiences, able to navigate the building and grounds under any weather conditions, move program equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs., and work in a highly sensory and stimulating work environment due to constant interaction with guests, pass background checks according to Museum of Discovery and Science guidelines

POSITION: DIGITAL MEDIA COORDINATOR – FULL TIME

The Digital Media Coordinator  will help Museum staff engage with diverse audiences on social media, identify online communities and look for opportunities to grow our social reach and brand awareness in a positive manner.

Seeking an experienced social media coordinator to join our team to develop, implement, track and optimize our digital marketing campaigns across all digital channels. For this position, you should be highly creative, entrepreneurial, and energized by working with a team. Ultimately, you should be able to effectively connect our brand with our online supporters. A degree in communications, marketing, digital media or a related field and/or a certification in Google AdWords or Analytics are preferred.

VISITOR SERVICES

POSITION: VISITOR SERVICES SUPERVISOR – FULL TIME

Seeking qualified candidate to supervise the front line operations including box office, Information Desk and IMAX Theater. Supports the development and implementation of a consistently high-quality visitor service program. Participates in the training and evaluation of staff. Assists  Manager in selection of new hires, training, reviews, evaluations and tracks performance for assigned staff and volunteers including all concierge volunteers, cashiers, and ushers. Implements and strictly enforces the Museum’s uniform/dress code. Helps to implement a program of volunteer recruitment to ensure that volunteers are adequately and appropriately trained, supervised and utilized throughout the visitor service department. Handle administrative tasks as assigned.

Requires one year of college and two years of work experience or equivalent combination. Education and work experience must be from a related field, e.g. hospitality management, box office or retail management, or operations preferably with an attraction or museum. Must be a skilled excellent customer service professional and possess good written and verbal communication skills. Must be computer literate and have the ability to quickly learn the POS system. Availability to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends. Employee must obtain first aid certification within 90 days of hire and keep it current. Must be able to climb stairs in the IMAX Theater repeatedly throughout the day and able to stand for long periods of time.

POSITION: BOX OFFICE CASHIER

Deliver the best IMAX experience to visitors. Perform assigned job duties at the highest level of efficiency to ensure that the ticket office is operating at its optimum. Provide excellent customer service with a friendly, professional attitude. Maintain a working knowledge of the Museum of Discovery and Science and the AutoNation IMAX Theater including current films, programs and exhibits. Previous customer service and sales experience. Good communications skills. Must be friendly, helpful and kind. Able to work under pressure in constantly changing conditions. Able to stand for long periods of time. Must be available to work holidays, weekends and evenings. Maintain a working knowledge of the Museum of Discovery and Science and the AutoNation IMAX Theater including current films, programs and exhibits.

IMAX THEATER

Previous customer service experience.  Mature attitude.  Good communication skills, able to speak before large groups of visitors.  Attention to safety techniques, effectively able to control crowds of people.  Able to work under pressure in constantly changing conditions. EXHIBITS

POSITION: EXHIBITS MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN FULL TIME

Work as a member of the exhibits team. Maintain, repair and refurbish existing exhibits.  Assist set up and take down of traveling exhibits. Participate in the conceptualization, design, engineering and fabrication of future permanent or traveling exhibits. Work the exhibit floor daily and keep the exhibits in good, safe working order by conducting maintenance and safety checks on exhibits and motion simulators. Clean, maintain and repair floor exhibits on a daily basis.

Fabrication skills required including woods, metals, plastics. Familiarity with hand tools, hand and stationary power tools, and various materials such as Plexiglas, wood, laminates, etc. Must have ability to work on or in exhibit structures in a number of awkward positions:  prone, supine, etc.;  ability to work 8 hours a day at a bench or moving from area to area as the situation demands; ability to lift 50 lbs. and aid in lifting of heavy crates, exhibit structures, etc.  Must possess basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic systems; have ability to drive a fork truck; have familiarity with paints and other finishing media.  Must have a sense of humor and above average interpersonal skills.  Must be able to work in high spaces 30’ and higher.  Must be able to work weekends, evenings and holidays.

LIFE SCIENCES

POSITION: OTTER SPECIALIST – FULL TIME

SUMMARY: To work as a member of the Life Science Department under the direction of the Life Science Manager.  Provide care for the Otters and all animals within the Ecoscapes exhibit.

QUALIFICATIONS: A B.S. degree in zoology, biology, psychology or related field is preferred; equivalent experience may be substituted. Two years experience in a zoo or aquarium with experience in daily care and maintenance of animal enclosures preferred.  Experience with otters, reptiles, small mammals and fish preferred. Knowledge of operant conditioning and training is ideal. The applicant will also be responsible for learning basic filtration operations and maintenance. Must be PADI certified and able to swim in a variety of conditions.  Must be able to work in high places and lift at least 50 lbs.  This position includes weekend and holiday work. The qualified individual must be able to function as a team member as well as under limited supervision. Must have a valid driver license.

POSITION: ZOO KEEPER – FULL TIME
