EMPLOYMENT AT THE MUSEUM

Through their individual and collective energy and talent, the staff and volunteers of the Museum of Discovery and Science provide pathways to learning and enjoyment to visitors of all ages.

The Museum offers a dynamic and enriching environment to work in and to volunteer. Opportunities vary, and the following brief descriptions provide insight into available positions. If no listings appear, then there are no employment opportunities currently available. Please check back periodically for future job openings. Graphic Designer - Full Time


SUMMARY: Designs and produces a wide variety of in-house printed materials, signage and advertising for exhibits, films, events and programs. Assists creative director with design and production of collateral materials. Organization and updating of digital and printed materials. Perform all other studio, Museum and Imax duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Degree in graphic design with 2 years experience in field. Working knowledge of Macintosh platform and proficiency with standard software: QuarkXpress, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Basic knowledge of internet/website with ability to produce graphics for website and social media distribution.

Museum Gift Store Supervisor - Full Time Temporary

Position open for a friendly, professional Museum Gift Store Supervisor.  Three years of
customer service, sales, and cash handling experience plus one year of college or equivalent
experience and education.  Must be responsible and honest in completing all cash handling and
required record-keeping procedures. The right person will work with staff and management to
further our mission and to sustain a “climate of quality.” Must have a pleasant customer Service
attitude with ability to motivate and co-manage team. Good oral communications skills. Prefer
some past supervisory experience. Capacity to use computers and learn POS system. Ability to
lift up to 50 pounds and stock store merchandise in storage and display areas. Must be able to
work weekends, holidays, and nights if necessary.  Great position for student wanting summer
employment.

POSITION TITLE: Cashier - Part Time

QUALIFICATIONS: Previous customer service and sales experience.  Good communications skills.  Ability to be friendly, helpful and kind.  Must be able to work under pressure and constantly changing conditions.  Ability to stand for long periods of time.  Must be available to work holidays, weekends and evenings.

SUMMARY: Greet visitors and provide excellent customer service to Museum visitors at all times. Be knowledgeable and up-to-date on all films, exhibits and events and all fee-based programs. As a cashier process Museum visitor transactions including selling IMAX tickets, advanced tickets, exhibit tickets and gift certificates using the VISTA ticketing system. Follow all Museum cash handling procedures. Proactively sell memberships and combination admission tickets.

POSITION TITLE: IMAX Usher - Part Time

QUALIFICATIONS: Previous customer service experience.  Mature attitude.  Good communication skills, able to speak before large groups of visitors.  Attention to safety techniques, effectively able to control crowds of people.  The ability to work under pressure and constantly changing conditions.  Ability to stand for long periods of time and to operate 3D glasses cleaning equipment.

SUMMARY:  Deliver the best IMAX experience to visitors. Perform assigned job duties at the highest level of efficiency to ensure that theater is operating at its optimum. Provide excellent customer service with a friendly, professional attitude. Maintain a working knowledge of the Museum of Discovery and Science and the AutoNation IMAX Theater including current films, programs and exhibits.

Reservations Agent -  Part Time

Qualifications: Experience in phone sales (1 year or more). Heightened customer service and organizational skills.  Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time. Computer literate in word processing, Excel, Word, etc.  Ability to work extended hours, including weekends and holidays.       

Summary: Sell the Museum’s group products, programs, films, and exhibition.  Execute reservations and transactions for same.

JOB POSITION: Otter Specialist - Full Time

SUMMARY:
To work as a member of the Life Science Department under the direction of the Life Science Manager. Provide care for the Otters and all animals within the Ecoscapes exhibit.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A B.S. degree in zoology, biology, psychology or related field is preferred; equivalent experience may be substituted. Two years experience in a zoo or aquarium with experience in daily care and maintenance of animal enclosures preferred. Experience with otters, reptiles, small mammals and fish preferred. Knowledge of operant conditioning and training is ideal. The applicant will also be responsible for learning basic filtration operations and maintenance. Must be PADI certified and able to swim in a variety of conditions. Must be able to work in high places and lift at least 50 lbs. This position includes weekend and holiday work. The qualified individual must be able to function as a team member as well as under limited supervision. Must have a valid driver license.

PART TIME EDUCATOR - LEVEL 1 - PART TIME


Bachelors degree, previous customer service and teaching experience.  Good communications skills and the, ability to speak before large audiences. Attention to safety techniques, effectively able to control crowds.  The ability to work under pressure and constantly changing conditions.  Ability to stand for long periods of time.  Must be available to work holidays, weekends and evenings. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide excellent customer service to all museum visitors.
  • Teach/conduct school, public and youth programs including camps, camp-ins and birthday parties.  Will also be responsible for delivering theater shows. 
  • Interact with Museum visitors on a daily basis by demonstrating the concepts behind the Museum exhibits.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, insurance and a car to deliver outreach programs to schools and various locations.
  • Learn how to handle animals by taking and passing all levels of the animal handling training program (level 1-6).  
  • Operate the MaxFlight, Airboat Adventure and the Mars Rover on a daily basis.
  • Greet school and recreation groups throughout the year.  
  • Deliver formal and informal Science Café programs on a daily basis.

ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT- Full Time

Responsible for processing of accounts payable, petty cash, deposits, filing and journal accruals. Also responsible for postage meter, posting of mail, ordering office supplies, and cleaning and maintaining office supply closet and copy machine room. Function as back-up to Revenue Accounting Assistant as needed. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with fellow employees, vendors and visitors. 

College degree in related field or equivalent experience at a responsible level in accounting. Advanced computer literacy in accounting and Windows based software required. Proficiency in Sage MIP Accounting Software and Excel preferred. Must possess English verbal and written communication skills.
